China's folk
culture is especially rich for two reasons. First, she justly boasts
a continued history for 5000 years. Second, she has 56 ethnic groups,
each of which has its own rich tradition and folk culture.
It is quite impossible to do justice to her rich folk culture in this
short section of this little book. Nor do we desire to attempt the
impossible.
Our hope is that time and experience on the part of you the guide
interpreter will compensate for the inadequate treatment of this subject
here.
If we accept the broad definition of folk culture, everything except
scenic spots, historical relics and urban sights falls into its realm.
Then it covers anthropology, mythology, folklore, oral traditions,
ballads, primitive religion, crafts, folk arts, customs and habits,
modes of production, institutions of the family, rituals of seasonal
cycles and life cycles, eating habits and foods, marriage and funeral
ceremonies. . .
Obviously, this short section has got to be very selective. It falls
into four brief parts: national festivals, minority festivals, newly
emerging festivals 'and sample tours.
